Getting Started in Chiapas

By Claire Slesinski | IMIFAP GlobalGiving Coordinator

During these last months, our project “Migration: Help Children in Chiapas, Mexico”, has made important developments thanks to the support of GlobalGiving donors, starting with a training workshop in the development of “life skills” for 8 teachers of the Los Chorros community from the Chenalhó municipality. Today about 120 kids are receiving life skills education thanks to the program “Yo quiero, yo puedo”, with the objectives of risk prevention, stopping negative outcomes of marginalization, inequality, and economic poverty, as well as preventing health problems, poor hygiene, malnutrition, school dropout, violence and addictions.

With these foundations, we continue working to help to mitigate the problems within families that are caused by the migration of parents to the USA or other Mexican states, which is very harmful for their kids.

The replication of our programs and workshops by child care providers (teachers, parents, and other adults), has the end goal of raising awareness of the impact of adults’ behavior on child development. With the development of the life skills, adults are less prone to child abuse, to fall into alcoholism or addiction to other drugs or to commit crimes. To the contrary, life skills development contributes to community development, and helps children to grow up to be emotionally stable.

With donations from our GlobalGiving donors we will continue with our effort to train 22 more teachers, which will allow us to reach 400 more children in the area, and to provide them with text books, which contain content designed to increase knowledge, life skills development and reduce psychosocial barriers.  With continued support through GlobalGiving, we can support all of the children that live in this high-risk area of Chiapas, Mexico.

________________________________________________________________
