Children cancer patients who come from families of extreme poverty face two major problems, different from those children that are not in the same social and economical situation. Their first problem is the disease itself, but they also encounter numerous barriers in the Colombian health system and are very much affected by their minimum economic resources.
Most of these families do not have financial resources to travel from their home town to the hospitals were treatments are given.
In many cases, health entities do not provide basic needs for these children and their families. Needs like housing, food and transportation during the time they ara in treatment in another town away from home. The majority of the children and their families that the Andrea y Vanessa Foundation receive come from far away towns, that do not have social medical centers that supply them with these basic needs.
For the patients’ parents, an enormous sacrifice is demanded to bring their sons or daughters to the health center for their treatments, because in most cases they need to travel a mínimum of 30 minutes and up to 4 hours.
The lack of information about the disease, its treatment, and the rights to health programs, is the major barrier that weakens the possibility of a future cure of these cancer patients.
This project compromises with the mission of Andrea y Vanessa Foundation, searching for a way to continue providing the basic needs (housing, food and transportation) for these children and their families once they arrive to Barranquilla, Colombia.
In this project we include the three basic needs we wish to provide these families so they can have a comfortable stay in the foundation:
- Housing: During the time needed for treatment we offer the child and one family member hospitality at no cost. Our lodging facilities include 5 bedrooms, 26 beds, and a capacity for 13 children and 13 adults.
