Summary

The Croatian Guide Dog and Mobility Association promotes the basic human rights of children and youths with developmental disabilities, who are often marginalized by society. The Association's support positively impacts the quality of life of these individuals by partnering them with specially-trained assistance dogs at no cost. The project will fund two assistance dogs for a girl with autism spectrum disorder and communication difficulties, and two twin brothers with cerebral palsy.

Challenge

Children and youths with developmental disabilities experience discrimination and social exclusion because their abilities are underestimated or dismissed, preventing equal opportunities and integration into society. Without the help of an assistance dog, a 10-year-old girl will lose the opportunity for further development and growth, as well as 21-year-old students with specific needs who are now stepping into the adult world where social inequality is even greater.

Solution

Assistance dogs provide therapeutic benefits to children and youths with developmental disabilities by calming and relieving stress, which results in positive behavioral and physical changes, like learning to walk and talk, and adapting to new environments and situations. The assistance dog will help the girl improve communication, concentration, and help the boys improve motor skills. Outcome: greater independence, interaction with peers, integration into society, and better quality of life.

Long-Term Impact

By promoting the humane role of assistance dogs, the Association is positively transforming the lives of children and youths with disabilities, raising public awareness and overcoming prejudice in the community. The working life of an assistance dog is eight years, while the developmental process of a person with disabilities stretches over a lifetime. The assistance dogs will provide continuity in the development of three individuals with disabilities. Each success gives hope to the next child.
