Progress Report on the Children’s Home of CCHP
June – August 2013
International Children's Day
International Children’s Day, June 1st, is classified as a public holiday in Cambodia and the demographics of the country makes the holiday an important one. All the children attended International Children's Day. The holiday was celebrated by the hundreds of children from many other children's organizations in the area. The day was filled with performances of all kinds from traditional dancing to funny skits and break dancing. The children had a great time together.
A 3-Day Trip to Battambang
This week, all the children went on a 3-day, 2-night trip to Battambang, the Cambodia’s second largest city lies in the heart of the Northwest and the leading rice-producing province of the country, along with the CCHP staff and 2 volunteers. The trip was generously sponsored by one of our past volunteers, Jeremy Hall. Thank you so much, Jeremy!
We visited many lovely places, including the Wat Damreisar (White Elephant Pagoda), Sangke River, Phnom Sampov and Phnom Banon mountains, and the Country Love Garden. Everyone had great fun singing and chanting on the bus together, eating picnic meals each day, and sharing the excitement of seeing new sights with each other. All the children and staff had a wonderful time!
Youth House
Some of our children have grown into mature youths and completed their high school studies. They are now continuing their education, either in vocational training or university studies. This year, we plan to move them to a youth house separate from the CCHP campus, where they can learn to live independently while attending their training with the continued support of the CCHP. These youths are positive role models for our younger children, and they show great potential to reintegrate successfully into the community and break the cycle of poverty. However, we need your ongoing support and generosity to make these final steps a reality for our youths.
Home Gardening
The children learn farming techniques as part of CCHP-supported life skills education. It focuses on the learning fields of agricultural, science and environmental life skills in basic education. We have just begun building and designing a garden to produce organic fruit and vegetables for the children’s meals. The soil on the CCHP property is not so fertile and so bamboo designed boxes have been drafted and test-built to use in growing the crops.
