By Sharon Runge | Kenya Connect Volunteer and June Trip Leader
Dear Friends of Kenya Connect!
We are thrilled to announce that a 1/4 of an acre of land was purchased close to the center of Wamunyu and a Kenya Connect team of volunteers from St. John's Parish Day School and Episcopal Church (Ellicott City, MD) and Southern Middle School In Lothian, MD visited in June to continue work on the project! The volunteers measured the property and worked with Kenya Connect Field Director, James Musyoka, to begin initial plans for the design and placement of the building.
In addition, the team planted 14 trees on the perimeter of the property and local craftsmen began work digging holes for the property fence and creating the fence posts. The visiting team also heard great excitement from the teachers, parents, and students of the Kenya Connect partner schools about the new center. As the team saw, there are very few books, magazines and other resources in the schools and towns and virtually no computers. The villagers are deeply appreciative of the work of Kenya Connect and our many donors who are making this project a reality!
The team also carried over books that students in Mount View Middle School in Marriottsville, MD created to teach about science and environmental issues including the topics of recycling, clean water, and pollution. These books will be included in the Green Community Center's collection!
We are anticipated breaking ground in the next couple of months! We look forward to sending you photos of the ground breaking and updating you on this project!
Once again, accept our deepest thanks for helping to transform the community of Wamunyu, Kenya!
