Help Build a Green Community Center in Kenya!

Last month we reported that the foundation was being dug and that the fence was almost complete.  We are thrilled that the fence is fully installed and the front gate is complete!  Students from Wooton High School's Honor Society (MD) helped provide funds for the gate for which we are deeply appreciative.

This week the foundation is being poured.  As most of you know, this will anchor the building and ensure that it will be a solid, lasting structure.  We will continue to provide more pictures once the foundation is complete and the walls begin to be erected.

In the meantime, students from Arundel High School in Anne Arundel, Maryland are holding a Quidditch Tournament in March to raise funds for the computers for the LRC with the intent of beginning a book group with students in MD and Kenya.  It is exciting to see how High Schools students are helping to make a difference in the world!

We are still seeking funds to help complete the project and provide resource materials for the ENTIRE community of Wamunyu.  Just imagine the community-- children and their parents, grandmothers and grandfathers all having the opportunity to read books and newspapers and work on a computer for the FIRST time.  We welcome donations to help this project become a full reality!

We are thrilled to report that construction began on the Kenya Connect Learning Resource Center!  The St. John's Team from Ellicott City, Maryland and the Kenya Connect staff broke ground on January 11, 2012 and began digging the foundation with Field Director James Musyoka and the Kenya Connect team in Wamunyu.  The U.S. group was thrilled to see the water tank fully in place, piped water to the site, a fence and gate around the property and the pit latrine almost fully constructed.  

The community of Wamunyu is very excited with the progress of the project and are eagerly anticipating the opening of the center.  While the U.S. team visited the Wamunyu ABC Primary School, the Head Teacher presented Field Director James Musyoka with a gift of a soap-stone carving for the new center.  The teachers and students are excited that they will have access to computers and the internet and books and magazines.  As Nelson Mandela stated, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."  The Learning Resource Center will provide educational materials and resources to open the world to the children and community of Wamunyu 

The Kenya Connect team continues to be deeply appreciative of your support of the project.  We are still raising funds to complete and fully equip the building.  In the meantime, we will be sending regular updates as the project progresses!
