Join Eastern Congo Initiative (ECI) as we partner with Christophe's Children orphanage to build a vocational training center in Kalehe, DRC. This center will empower local women and orphaned teens with valuable skills in sewing and baking, enriching lives and strengthening the community. Your support will help bring this transformative project to life, fostering self-sufficiency and brighter futures. Together, we can create lasting change in Congo.
In Kalehe, DRC, floods devastated two communities, leaving over 2,500 missing and many children orphaned in 2023. Christophe's Children orphanage stepped in to care for them. Meanwhile, local women face joblessness, struggling to support their families. Residents must travel extremely long distances to larger cities for essentials and supplies like bread-journeys made difficult by poor roads and ongoing conflict, highlighting the urgent need for local resources and opportunities.
Together, through this partnership, we aim to build a vocational training center at the orphanage to empower orphaned teens and local women with valuable skills in sewing and baking. This shared space will serve as a hub for growth and opportunity, where women can utilize the facilities during school hours, and teens can attend afternoon electives. By equipping them with practical trades, we're fostering self-sufficiency, enriching lives, and strengthening the entire community.
The vocational center is designed for lasting impact, with a self-sustaining model that sells locally made products to fund and expand operations. Women will gain the means to support their families, regain a sense of dignity, and build brighter futures. Teens will acquire essential skills for life beyond the orphanage. This model fosters community growth, as women mentor one another and older teens train younger children, ensuring these valuable skills are passed down and multiplied over time.
