Permaculture Resource Centre is a 5-hectare training and demonstration hub near Chitungwiza, Zimbabwe - a living classroom where local farmers learn, produce and copy sustainable farming systems. A solar-powered borehole gives year-round water, fish ponds, a mushroom farm and nutrition gardens are all running already. We now need to complete the site: perimeter fencing, a Resource Centre building, an apiary, small livestock units, a sports field for children, and a farmer training programme.
Around 5,100 people in Seke Rural are caught in a cycle of drought, degraded soil and unemployment. Traditional crops have failed, there are almost no jobs, and 64% of households are led by women who are surviving on very little. There is no local place where farmers can see sustainable methods working and learn them - and the community itself identified a permanent training hub as what they need most.
The Centre combines up to ten small enterprises - fish, mushrooms, vegetables, honey, poultry, rabbits and more - on one site with reliable solar-powered water. Farmers learn through hands-on training, then take these low-cost, drought-resilient methods home to their own plots. Each enterprise produces food and income, so families aren't relying on a single crop. Every trained farmer is also prepared to teach others, so skills spread through the community.
- Year-round food security and new income streams for 5,100 residents - At least 64% participation from women-led households, strengthening household nutrition and keeping children in school - Restored soils and land through permaculture and agroforestry - A replicable model that can spread to other communities across Zimbabwe - Community-owned infrastructure designed to keep running well beyond donor funding
