12 years old Ruksana hails from Kharien area of district Budgam, Kashmir. She has always been the favorite student of her teachers and she too, aspired to be a school teacher. In 2016, the circumstances at her house changed due to her father’s declining income and she had to leave her school to support the family. She was in class 5 when she was forced to give up education.
Team CRY identified Ruksana as a drop out during baseline survey and met Ruksana’s family to put her back to school. Field team met with stiff resistance from her parents even though Ruksana herself was very keen to continue her education. The team continued their visits to her house and even approached the local Molvi to intervene. All their efforts yielded result when after couple of months, team was finally able to convince Ruksana’s parents to send her to Children Activity Centre (CAC) for atleast couple of hours.
Ruksana started attending CAC and within 3 months she covered her class 5 syllabus and was securing very high marks in the assessments at CAC. CAC teachers enrolled her for Bridge course exam and she completed the syllabus in 6 months. Ruksana cleared the bridge course exam at local school held in September 2017 and was declared eligible for admission in class 6. She secured highest marks in the external exam and this made her parents very proud and they agreed to send her again to school. Currently Ruksana is in class 6 and is very happy to be back among her old friends. She never misses a class in school and also very confident that one day she will also become a teacher.
