Help Avoid a COVID-19 Explosion Among Refugees

Our efforts to provide life-saving health care services to Syrian refugee children and their families facing the threat of the COVID 19 pandemic continue as part of our overall Social Health Care humanitarian aid program that has been serving Syrian refugees since 2011. To expand on our ability to address pandemic related health needs for this particularly vulnerable community, and in line with our philosophy of local capacity building, we are enlisting the assistance of our local psycho-social skills trainees in Jordan, most of who are medical students, in providing for these medical health needs.

Our pandemic related health care services include:

• Establishing virtual stations at sites where there are concentrations of refugees to make it possible for receiving tele-health care services for both pandemic psychosocial related needs.
• Providing pandemic related health guidance, monitoring, and education on prevention and self-help mitigation of COVID infection symptoms,
• Where possible, providing self-monitoring and preventative health care equipment and supplies, as well as medications and respiratory enhancement equipment for alleviating symptoms.

The COVID pandemic is increasingly taking a devastating toll on the lives, well-being, and futures of hundreds of thousands of refugee children and their families in Jordan. Nearly 3 years of this deadly pandemic adds to the plight of this highly at-risk refugee community that has already been suffering from a chronic state of day-to-day crisis, war trauma, and profound loss due to being uprooted from everything they’ve had and known in daily life due to the Syrian civil war for approaching 11 years, as well as exposure to increasingly frequent and unrelenting extreme weather conditions while living in crowded and compromised living conditions.
This is further compounded by being typically at a lower priority for access to even basic medical care in a country struggling to meet the health needs of it’s own citizens,

The combined impact of these stressors places this community at even greater risk of life and death, and lost hope for the future, as these conditions continue to grow. Given limited resources that are not keeping up with the need, maintaining our work to serve this community is also becoming significantly more challenging.

At the same time the plight of Syrian refugees has unfortunately been fading from public eye and attention as time and other world events capture the global spotlight. Also declining has been the critically needed financial resources required for us to carry on this completely free service by our amazing and dedicated volunteer team of expert health care professionals and local trainees who donate their time and efforts to assist those in desperate need.

Our ability to keep providing these disaster health care program services in response to this ongoing and overwhelming humanitarian tragedy relies directly on the financial support of those who are drawn to supporting our efforts during this crisis by helping to cover the required direct out of pocket costs of doing so.

We continue to appeal for the critical financial support of those who can donate the energy and power of their money to help meet the direct costs of our getting these services to those in such desperate need, and in time.
