DDartists Project Report (Fall 2025)

By Claudia Park | Program Coordinator

Empowering Artists with Developmental Disabilities to Shine Through Creativity

From July to October 2025, our DDartists continued to nurture their creativity and confidence through outreach events, exhibitions, and art-based initiatives. They not only showcased their talents but also deepened community connections and shaped new narratives around ability and artistry.

Showcasing the Talents of Artists with Developmental Disabilities

Last month, our community came together for a day that radiated creativity, inclusion, and connection. Artists with developmental disabilities presented and sold their handmade goods—T-shirts, postcards, and cards featuring their original artwork—inviting visitors to experience their artistic vision up close.

Hosted by Give Chances, the event was more than a sale. It was a celebration of talent and self-expression, providing a platform for each artist to share their story through their creations. Attendees were deeply moved by the art and the personal journeys behind each piece.

"These aren't just beautiful designs. They carry the artists' hearts and personal stories. I was truly touched," shared one participant.

All proceeds from the event directly supported the artists' ongoing creative activities and Give Chances' disability awareness programs, reinforcing our shared commitment to advocacy through art.

When Art Speaks Louder Than Words

A Chair That Tells a Story

This is not an ordinary chair. Created by talented DDartists, "The Chair You Can't Sit On" stands as a symbol of imagination beyond limitation. It redefines function and invites viewers to reflect on the challenges and beauty that come with embracing difference. Unlike typical furniture meant for use, this artwork reminds us that where others see barriers, creativity can flourish.

Beyond Function, Toward Meaning

This piece teaches a profound lesson: disability does not define ability. It's a visual story of resilience, transformation, and the power of giving individuals the opportunity to create and be seen. Through this project, our artists have shown that limitations can spark imagination, and that creative expression flourishes when people are given a genuine chance.

Your support makes moments like these possible. Every chair, every piece of art, and every opportunity to create emerges because of your generosity. Together, we are not just showcasing art—we are amplifying voices, nurturing talent, and building a more inclusive future.

A Chair That Lifts the Heart: Joon Han's "Celestial Chair"

DDartist Joon Han's latest masterpiece, Celestial Chair, also known as The Chair of Love, captures the uplifting spirit of perseverance through art. Inspired by the koi's mythical journey upstream to become a dragon, the piece symbolizes growth, determination, and hope.

The Story Within the Art

At the heart of the piece is a graceful koi fish painted across the seat. In the well-loved legend, a koi swims upstream against relentless currents and, through perseverance, transforms into a dragon. Joon chose this symbol intentionally. The koi's journey echoes the persistence required to learn, create, and hope—even when progress feels slow. The image invites the sitter to participate in that story: to rest for a moment and rise renewed, lifted in heart to a higher and brighter place.

Joon's radiant color palette and vivid koi illustration evoke the feeling of swimming along a luminous stream. The piece emerges as a work that rises through love, hope, and resilience—a visual testament to transformation.

A Moment of Triumph

When Celestial Chair was sold this fall, it marked not only an artistic achievement but also a moment of deep human connection. The patron who purchased it described an immediate and heartfelt response, a feeling of immense joy upon encountering the piece. For this collector, the chair became more than furniture; it became a daily reminder of hope and beauty.

For Joon Han, witnessing his work connect so directly affirmed the chair's deeper purpose: not merely to be a place to sit, but to change how the person who sits on it feels. The sale thus represents more than a transaction. It stands as a profound connection between the artist who imagined hope and the patron who now lives with it daily.

Why It Matters

This achievement reflects the very essence of the DDartist Program: creating beauty together. Our program nurtures artists' voices—supporting their confidence, technique, and storytelling—so that works like Celestial Chair can find their audience and create lasting impact. Each success like Joon Han's reminds us that inclusion enriches art and that communities grow when diverse artists are given a platform to share their talents and voices.

A heartfelt congratulations to Joon Han for this beautiful achievement. We are so proud of you.

Looking Forward

From cookie sales to community outreach events to gallery-quality artwork finding passionate collectors, the DDartist Program continues to prove that artistic expression knows no boundaries. Each highlight this fall demonstrates the transformative power of inclusion—not as charity, but as mutual enrichment.

Thank you to everyone who supports Give Chances and our DDartist Program. Your generosity helps artists develop their craft, share their stories, and bring hope and beauty into the world. Together, we are building a more inclusive, joyful future through creativity.
