Help Suffering Animals Get Medical Treatment

The rains have settled in over Koh Lanta. Mornings start grey, the afternoons open up with a fast, heavy downpour, then the sun returns as if nothing happened. This is the green season, and the island has turned every shade of it.

It is quieter now. The boats are tied up and the beaches are empty, but little changes for us. The animals still get their walks, their meals, and as much attention as we can give. If you have ever thought about visiting, this is one of the best times to come.

This month I want to tell you about one dog in particular. His name is Raven, and his story is the reason we do this work.

We almost did not find Raven at all.

He was deep in the jungle, tucked into thick brush, when our team reached him. It took a net to bring him out safely. He was in pain, frightened, and trying to disappear from the world.

He had been attacked by other dogs while searching for food. The wound covered the right side of his face, around his eye, and by the time we got to him it had become infected. No one had been caring for it, and no one was coming. On his own, he would not have lasted much longer.

Our medical team began treatment straight away, cleaning the wound and starting the slow work of healing it. It was not quick, and it was not easy. But Raven held still and let us help him, and one thing became clear almost at once. Underneath all that fear was a gentle, trusting dog.

As the wound began to close, his real character came out. He followed his carers around the centre with his tail going, greeting everyone like an old friend. The deep wound healed into a clean pink scar. He was not searching for scraps anymore. He was busy stealing hearts.

And then came the part we always hope for. Raven found his family. He was adopted right here on Koh Lanta, and he is now settled into a home of his own, getting the head scratches and quiet afternoons he should have had all along.

Raven found his family right here on Koh Lanta, and watching him settle into a home of his own is the best part of what we do. But he is not the only one ready for it. Right now we have dogs and cats at the centre who are healthy, gentle, and waiting for the same chance he got.

If adopting has been somewhere in the back of your mind, this is the moment to act on it. A dog like Raven does not just gain a family when he leaves. He frees up a space here, and that space becomes a rescue for the next animal with nowhere else to go. One adoption saves two lives.
