Wet Dog Rescued

We made it to July!

June was a rough month and we were all so happy to see it end.

Our Centre was hit was a massive flood from a rainstorm like no other. We are into the rainy season here on Koh Lanta and are used to periodic rain. But it usually lasts up to a few hours, and then it's gone and the sun comes out. But not this time.

It all started two weeks ago. We experienced extreme rains like never before, and ended up more than knee-deep in floodwater. I've attached a selection of video and photos so you can understand the seriousness of our situation.

Thanks to the donors for our other Global Giving Project for building Kitty City, our new cat area, the cats were safe and sound. The flood water barely reached the cat house structure inside Kitty City. Some of the feline residents did get a bit wet, but this was the curious and adventerous ones. These crazy cats wanted to check out the goings on outside of their sleeping quarters. They were back on dry ground as soon as they realized they didn't enjoy have wet moving from their paws up their legs.

The dogs weren't so lucky, but we did get them all up into their dry and covered nighttime sleeping area. Unfortunately our supplies were deep in floodwater. With quick teamwork, we did manage to salvage almost half of the food supply with an assembly line rescue operation. The volunteers were hit hard with their living area turned into a flowing river. Many of their rooms filled with floodwater higher than their beds. Everyone pitched in and we got through the 2 days of non-stop scrambling, lifting, cleaning and hugging the poor animals that couldn't figure out what was going on.

I'm pleased to report that we've completed our clean-up and have made major modifications to our drainage system. We've enlarged it considerably so flood waters can be rerouted away from our Centre. We've also prepared a large supply of sandbags so we can reroute any flowing water from a future downpour.

10 rescue animals headed to their forever homes last week

A week ago Monday was a very lucky day for 10 of our rescue animals, who left on their journey to their forever homes. Half went to the UK, and the other five to various locations around the planet. We had to use both our vehicles, the one centre vehicle and our mobile clinic truck, for the 20 hour round trip to take all these animals to airports in Phuket and Krabi. We prayed that we'd have no emergency that day. Our prayers were answered and surprisingly the day was uneventful and calm in the hospital. This is a perfect example of why this project is so critical for us. We need a dedicated ambulance. If we would have had an emergency that day.....

All the animals successfully passed their airport inspections and flew off to their new lives. By the time you read this they have all been with their new families for at least a week. It's so heartwarming to know that these poor rescued animals are now experiencing the love of their own family. A total 180 turnaround from what they experienced prior to their rescue.

We not only save their lives, we strive to give them a good life with a forever family all ther own.

Koh Lanta in the Winter High Season is a Difficult Time for the Animals

Although high season brings more visitors to the center, it also puts more cars and motorbikes on the road. This leads to many road accidents with cats and dogs as the victims.

In just one day, a kitten and an eight-year old cat were hit by a car and motorbike, respectively. They were rushed to the clinic and are suffering from severe head trauma. Your help is desperately needed as they fight to overcome their potentially life-threatening injuries.

The female kitten was hit by a car and has several wounds on her body. When she arrived, she was in a state of shock and was given pain and anti-inflammatory medications.

The older cat who was hit by a motorbike is the one who has the more serious injuries. When he first arrived, his nose was bleeding and he was disoriented due to head trauma. He was in so much pain and could barely lift his head. The vets immediately gave him medications to manage his acute pain and inflammation.

One of his eyes is still half shut, which is most likely due to brain injury. He also has a heart murmur, which puts him in an even more delicate state. He and the kitten are being monitored closely.

Fortunately, the animals who are lucky enough to survive their road accidents are recovering at our Centre. And this is where you come in. You are helping improve the rescue and medical treatment of dogs and cats on the island with your donation to this project.

Focus is on the Education Centre within the Cat Facility

Do you believe lasting change begins with today's youth? Our construction of an education area inside our Kitty City will help improve the treatment of animals on the island—today and for years to come.

A fun interactive education area onsite will allow us to invite more local Thai kids as part of our Animal Welfare Education Program. The program helps kids understand that just like us, animals need food, shelter, medical care and love.

Recently, the students from Phra Ae school visited Lanta Animal Welfare to paint murals of cats and dogs. It was a project initiated by an art teacher who was visiting the center while on holiday.

She was deeply moved by LAW's mission and wanted to help us engage the local Thai kids by working on a mural with them. She hoped that it would help them understand our mission; that they would learn to take care of animals on the island; and that they would spread that knowledge with others.

Education leads to knowledge, which leads to empathy and compassion. By educating and engaging Thai youth today, these kids will go on to influence their peers, their elders, and future generations.

April is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month

You can help by adopting a rescue animal. Before the animals at our Centre were rescued, they were suffering on the streets--often abused and neglected. Many were in serious accidents or viscious animal fights. And the majority were abandoned by their owners, who thought of them as disposable things rather than vulnerable beings with the same needs as humans.

There are still so many rescue cats and dogs here at our centre who have been patiently waiting for someone to love and give them a forever home. Can they find that comfort and happiness with you?

Educating local boys on medical care for animals

Welcome to the first Project Report of 2019

Educating the children is how we can make positive change for the animals

We have to start with the children if we want to make a lasting positive change for the animals on Koh Lanta.   Lanta Animal Welfare works with the local schools to teach the children to understand and respect animals. While we do go to the local schools regularly, we are now starting to bring them to our Centre so they can interact with the animals on a more formal basis and learn how to build relationships with them. Moving forward we also want to provide interactive technology for the students, and their families. This includes video, apps and other ways of educating the locals on animal care, the importance of sterilization and a regular immunization and check-up program for the animals.

Over the years, we've seen heartbreaking case after another of animal cruelty and neglect. Although there has been noticeable improvement in the way the animals are treated, there is still much to do in shifting how animals are regarded overall.

You are now a part of the solution with your support of this project, that is making a world of difference for the animals of Koh Lanta! Our education program continues to change the attitudes of the locals towards the animals, starting with the children and moving through their parents, throughout their families. The efforts in education, and our ability to rescue more and more animals, will make lasting change for the animals a reality.

The Cherished Older Dogs at Lanta Animal Welfare

And now a bit of news on our 'dog' side of the Centre.

We have three amazing golden oldies at Lanta Animal Welfare. They are Yak, Sanchez and Wayne. These three senior dogs of LAW recently left their mark, literally. They each had their paw prints memorialized on the ground at the entrance of the Center.

They are a testament to what your support can do, despite their traumatic pasts, from being attacked by a pack of dogs, to suffering from hunger pangs and unbearable skin conditions, to seeking refuge from abuse, speeding cars, motorbikes, and harsh weather.

Without the monthly donations from our supporters, dogs like Yak, Sanchez and Wayne will die on the streets because we will not be able to continue helping them.
