This project will send prosthetic legs to 250 amputees in Ghana, helping them regain their mobility and independence. We will do this by rescuing high-quality prosthetic legs destined to landfill, refurbishing them and shipping them to clinics for free. Around 9/10 amputees in Ghana don't have access to prosthetic legs, as legs costs thousands of dollars and in Ghana people simply can't afford these.
Only 1 in 10 people needing mobility devices in low- and middle-income countries receive them (WHO). In Ghana people simply can't afford legs, and shortages of trained prosthetists and supply-chain gaps mean care is out of reach for many amputees. Without mobility, amputees can't earn a living and often get stuck in a cycle of poverty. This project will reach hundreds of men, women and children who currently have no affordable access to prosthetic legs.
STAND refurbishes prosthetic limb components collected from hospitals in the UK and Europe, and provides them for free to prosthetic clinics, which creates an affordable prosthetic solution for patients. We want to refurbish and ship 250 prosthetic legs to the Orthopedic Training Centre's Nsawam and Walewale sites, where prosthetists will expertly fit and repair legs to at most 250 people (sometimes double amputees will take 2 legs).
Every $1 spent on assistive technology, like prosthetic limbs, delivers $9 in societal benefits. Restored mobility not only means amputees can earn a living, but it also lifts the care burden on family and friends (ATscale). Mobility is more about walking again, it's regaining independence to do the everyday things. It empowers and provides hope.
