There are no companion animal sanctuaries anywhere in Mid Michigan. Further, thousands of companion animals are euthanized daily, especially elderly and special needs animals. Opening the AFAR No-Kill Companion Animal Sanctuary will solve this dilemma. Additionally, specializing in special needs and elderly animals, there will be a place for these otherwise unwanted animals to live out their natural lives here rather then being euthanized, thus lowering the overall euthanasia rate in Michigan
The estimated number of cats and dogs entering shelters each year: 6-8 million with 3-4 million euthanized. The estimated number adopted yearly: 3-4 million, number reclaimed by previous caregivers: about 30 percent of dogs, 2 to 5 percent of cats. The sad truth is that because of overpopulation, millions of companion animals die. In some cases, the mother dog or cat is euthanized after her nursing babies have been euthanized. How could any mother stand to watch that happen! How can we?
Raising a companion animal Sanctuary will be a win-win for everyone involved. The animals will win because they have a 2nd (or 3rd, or 4th) chance at life and adoption or living the rest of their natural lives at the Sanctuary surrounded in Love and Respect. The community will win because of having a place to adopt a special friend or to place a beloved companion if necessary. AFAR will win because of our desire to give back to the World what we've been given. How cool is that? Everyone wins!
Once the Sanctuary is raised, we will specialize in the care and treatment of elderly and disabled animals. One program AFAR will offer is Military Animal Camp, which will provide temporary shelter to house the deployed military personnel beloved companion animals that do not otherwise have a secured location to place them, offering peace-of-mind those who deal with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Benefits will be far reaching. AFAR will be the first Sanctuary of its kind in Mid-Michigan.
