Whisper's Magical Children's Hospital is Uganda's third dedicated children's hospital. The hospital works 7 days a week, 24 hours a day; it specializes in emergencies, blood transfusions, and treating malnourished children. The hospital also provides free meals, nappies (diapers) and clean bedding daily. Each month the hospital treats around 1000 children. We treat children for a flat $10 fee, although about 260 patients a month are admitted and attended to without any fees at all
Busoga Region in Uganda is one of the poorest places on earth, particularly in the countryside where salaries of $1 a day are typical. Many children suffer from sickle cell disease, HIV, tuberculosis, anaemia and malnourishment. The children who are the most ill come from disadvantaged economic backgrounds and their families face daily struggles to survive. During the COVID lockdowns, the number of malnourished children that Whisper saw increased five-fold, and the number is still above normal.
This project helps children and their families with a complete medical treatment and further diagnoses (x-rays, CT scans and others) until the child is well enough to be discharged and fully healthy. We also provide social worker services and full assistance to the family with transport and home improvements.
The project has been very successful based on the loving care that is provided to the patients and other beneficiaries. As far as we know we are the only non-government hospital in Uganda that qualifies for distribution of Plumpy Nuts, a nutritional peanut paste for malnourished children. In recent years the hospital has treated around 40 malnourished patients per month.
