Last year, we shared a Project report of Sitralla, a young girl who underwent cleft lip surgery in November 2024. Sitralla had visited our programmes a number of times before this but was unable to undergo surgery safely due to illness and malnourishment caused by her cleft condition.
Sitralla's mother had struggled with feeding her and at one point her daughter lot so much weight that she weighed less than at birth.
Each time Sitralla visited our programme, her mother was provided with nutritional supplement and guidance to support her growth and her wellbeing.
In February 2025 Sitralla underwent successful cleft palate surgery.
After months of feeding difficulties, malnutrition, isolation, financial pressure and repeated journeys, Sitralla had finally received the treatment her family had been hoping for.
“I cannot explain my happiness when I saw my daughter after the surgery.”
When Project Harar followed up with the family in September 2025, Sitralla was described as a happy and active child. She runs and plays with her siblings, relatives and other children. Her mother has also been able to return to work and contribute to the family's livelihood.
Sitralla's family had to overcome many challenges in seeking treatment for their daughter. With the support of Project Harar, they were equipped to navigate the journey to specialist care, access nutritional support, manage the costs associated with repeated travel and eventually reach the point where Sitralla could safely undergo surgery.
