Challenge

A massive magnitude-7.5 earthquake struck the remote Highlands of Papua New Guinea on 26 February 2018. As of 8 March 2018, whilst official figures are yet to be confirmed, there are reports of over 100 fatalities, many injuries and widespread damage to infrastructure, food gardens and water sources. There have been several severe aftershocks that continue to impact people and impact access to devastated communities. Primary needs of people affected include water, sanitation and shelter.

Solution

CARE is aiming to reach 75,000 people in affected communities in Hela, Southern Highlands and Western provinces, providing clean and safe water and sanitation to groups affected by the earthquake. CARE is also distributing water containers, tarpaulins, soap, detergent and sanitation and hygiene kits for vulnerable families.

Long-Term Impact

CARE will continue to support health promotion and support aid posts and health centres to improve service provision to earthquake-affected people. CARE will conduct training to our partners in PNG and help them develop capacity and further support for ongoing help to the communities.
