Isha, 21, once dreamed of becoming a professional make-up artist. At 18, that future was abruptly disrupted when she was forced into marriage with a man who was already married, under intense family pressure and patriarchal expectations. What followed were eighteen months of severe physical and emotional violence that stripped away her confidence and her sense of self.
During this time, Isha became pregnant, hoping motherhood might bring some stability. Instead, continued abuse led to the loss of her baby — a devastating moment that forced her to confront the reality of her situation. Choosing dignity over violence, she made the difficult decision to leave the marriage, despite having no family support and facing threats and uncertainty.
Her search for safety brought her to Mumbai, and to our partner, Urja Trust. When she arrived, Isha was deeply traumatised; even travelling alone felt overwhelming after years of control and isolation.
Through trauma-informed counselling, structured casework and the stability of a safe shelter, Isha gradually began to rebuild her confidence and her sense of agency. Step by step, the team walked alongside her — not rushing her recovery, but making space for her to find her own footing again.
Today, Isha is pursuing professional training at a leading make-up institute, working towards the certification she once thought she'd lost the chance to earn. Alongside her studies, she works part-time, earning her own income for the first time in her adult life.
What once felt impossible — moving freely, making her own choices, planning for a future of her own design — has become her everyday reality.
Isha's journey reflects a profound transformation: from surviving violence to reclaiming independence, dignity and economic self-reliance. It is also a reminder of what becomes possible when women are met with patience, safety and consistent care, rather than judgement.
Thank you for making this possible. Because of you, women like Isha are not just surviving — they are building lives of their own choosing.
