The Fountain of Hope School ECDE Programme serves as one of the two entry points for out-of-school children into Turning Point’s Holistic Programmes. The programme prepares up to 40 children each year who have delayed starting school in Kibera, helping them transition into primary education.
In 2024, the ECDE Centre equipped 33 children with essential literacy and numeracy skills, reflecting a 10% increase from 2023. Notably, all 18 Pre-Primary 2 learners successfully transitioned to primary school, achieving a 100% progression rate. Additionally, two students advanced directly to Grade 1 through the newly introduced differentiation model, which tailors learning to individual needs and capabilities.
Moses was among the 18 children who got an opportunity to start their education at the ECDE Centre in 2023 at the age of 7.
Before joining the Centre, Moses had dropped out of a local informal school since his ill mother was unable to pay his school fees. Undeterred, he carried his school bag each day and begged his teachers to let him return to class. Seeing that his efforts were not bearing any fruit in his current school, he turned to a nearby school, pleading with the teachers to allow him to complete his academic year. At this school, one of the teachers recognised his determination and reached out to Turning Point for help through one of the organisation’s partners.
At his age, Moses would be joining his peers in Grade 2 in primary school, but this was impossible due to significant learning gaps. He was instead admitted to Pre-primary 2 at the ECDE Centre, where his journey of transformation began.
At the core of this transformation was Teacher Rael, who became deeply invested in Moses’s progress. She carefully assessed his strengths and needs, tailoring lesson plans to help him accelerate his learning.
He successfully advanced to Primary School for Grade 1 in August, thanks to the tailor-made lesson plans that responded to his learning abilities. In his new class, he has been showing remarkable progress and meeting expected standards.
‘Despite his tender age and being one class behind his peers, Moses has shown his enthusiasm and resilience in the face of challenges by demonstrating incredible determination to pursue his education, even when the odds were stacked against him.’ Says Tr. Rael.
Moses' story is a testament of how education can unlock a child's potential, preparing them for greater achievements in life and becoming agents of change in the society.
