Since we last wrote to let you all know what has been happening here at Kushadevi we have begun a new fresh academic year....and change is in the air!
Over 370 children from Nursery through to grade 6 are now learning in improved a creative environments and with better trained and more motivated teachers. Attendance is up again in the last 3 months, by 4.5%, and we have had a further 23 students join from the local community.
One of the big changes is that Kushadevi School is now becoming a truly Model School and has attracted all the surrounding government schools (12 of them!). After a number of meetings many of their staff have now been on learning visits to Kushadevi, so the changes your donations have helped to bring about are now spreading into other schools in the hills of Kavre District.
Across Nepal the quality of education at government school has been diabolical, with just under 48% government school students failing final exams. Only the poorest and most marginalised community's children attend. Every year a large number of government schools are either merged or closed, more than 6 in Kavre alone. In this context, we have established a model through which we have been successful in delivering the message that it is possible to provide quality education in government schools.
Kushadevi Model School Head, Ramesh tells us: "The surrounding schools have started coming to learn from training days and joining the classes as observers. The entire school community has become involved in the school and it has become the central focal point for the community it serves."
Our Project manager in Kushadevi reports that "It has attracted National media attention and regular positive reports in national papers reporting that Kushadevi Model School is a leading example of how to turn a rural Nepali government school around. The continuation & expansion of this programme will contribute to ensuring hundreds of students benefit in 2018/19 by creating educational opportunities that would have seemed impossible just over a year ago."
Thank you for all your support!
