Ruby is a long-term case supported by the Child Welfare League Foundation (CWLF). Born prematurely, Ruby has faced global developmental delays since early childhood. Each week, Ruby’s mother spends over an hour driving to the hospital for her rehabilitation sessions. However, a series of misfortunes struck the family: Ruby’s father passed away from illness, leaving the family without its primary breadwinner. The mother is now burdened not only with Ruby’s medical care but also with the educational needs of her two older sons, leaving her overwhelmed by a mix of complex emotions.
To support this family, the Child Welfare League Foundation (CWLF) connected Ruby to early intervention resources and provided financial assistance. Additionally, by offering psychological support, CWLF helped the mother through the difficult period of becoming the sole breadwinner, enabling her to focus more on finding suitable work for herself and her family. Although the exhaustion of returning to the workforce has been challenging for her, the thought of Ruby and her older sons gives her the strength to persevere.
However, the magnitude 7.2 earthquake that struck Hualien on April 3, 2024, disrupted the rare tranquility of this family once again. The disaster severely impacted Hualien’s tourism industry, causing the mother to lose her job and plunging the family’s finances into turmoil once more. The CWLF’s social worker swiftly provided earthquake relief funds and successfully connected Ruby’s family with corporate resources to purchase new furniture. What was once just a few mattresses in the living room now includes a full set of tables and chairs. The two older brothers each have their own desk, bed, and wardrobe, giving them personal space to focus on their studies and develop life skills.
Ruby’s journey has been nothing short of inspiring. From a child who couldn’t speak, crawl, or stand, she has now learned to talk, stand with support, and even take steps with assistance. Every bit of her progress is a testament to the unwavering dedication and love that define the Child Welfare League Foundation’s work. Our hope is to continue standing by this family, offering our care and support as they face whatever lies ahead, so they can keep moving forward with strength and hope.
