Project #19559

Help 30 first-generation learners begin school

by Ashraya Initiative for Children, Inc.

This project supports a 2-year playgroup program for children ages 2 to 3 years old from impoverished "Denotified Tribe" slum communities in India. These children will be the first in their families to go to school. The focus of the playgroup is to acclimate the children to a school environment, improve school readiness through play, games, songs, and activities, while also imparting valuable parenting skills to the parents who accompany the children. Free meals and healthcare are provided.

There are estimated to be more than 18 million street children in India. A significant number of these children come from Denotified (formerly "Criminal") Tribe communities. These communities face widespread discrimination, compounded by illiteracy, malnutrition, health and social problems stemming from extreme poverty. This project will allow children from these uniquely marginalized communities in Pune, India to transition toward a mainstream school environment.

The project will enroll 15 children per year in a weekly semi-structured playgroup. Children will become acclimated to a school environment while also receiving the opportunity to socialize and learn through play. Special attention will be paid toward age-appropriate developmental milestones and school readiness. Parents accompanying children will receive guidance and instruction in childcare and parenting. Additionally, all students in the playgroup will receive free meals and medical care.

Long-Term Impact

The project will provide 30 first generation learners from historically marginalized communities with a transitional step toward an excellent education and opportunities for holistic growth and development, which will put them on the path toward breaking the pervasive cycles of poverty in their slum communities.
