By Jennee Galland | Shelter Equity, CAO
Around the world, Shelter Equity has seen how safe housing, access to clean water, and reliable transportation can help families recover from hardship. While we continue to seek the funds needed to begin construction for this campaign, many families remain affected by the Cambodia-Thailand border conflict. We remain in close communication with our local partners and are committed to moving this project forward as soon as resources become available.
As we prepare for future implementation, we often reflect on families we have served through our previous work in Cambodia. Their experiences remind us of what is possible when families and communities have the resources they need to rebuild.
One of those families was Mrs. T's. A widow who supports her family by selling fish and raising pigs and chickens, she and 15 relatives spanning three generations lived in an overcrowded home with a leaking roof and dirt floor. During the rainy season, floodwaters regularly entered the home, creating ongoing health and safety concerns for everyone living there.
Thanks to generous Shelter Equity supporters and dedicated local partners on the ground, the family now lives in two connected raised homes designed to withstand seasonal flooding. Their homestead also includes a sanitary latrine and a well that provides access to clean water. They now have a safe and secure place where children can grow and the family can focus on building a more stable future.
Stories like Mrs. T's demonstrate the lasting impact that housing, water, and community support can have on families facing difficult circumstances. As fundraising continues for this project, we remain committed to helping displaced families rebuild their lives and restore stability in communities affected by the recent conflict.
As Mrs. T shared with us after moving into her new home, "We are so full of joy and happiness. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts."
