“Our kids all live on less than R1500 a month,” says Adri Marais, Christel House South Africa CEO. “That is $75 USD per month. The COVID-19 lockdown makes a bad situation worse. “The first thing we’re trying to do is get food to our children. Connecting with students is also a challenge. “Data becomes the problem. You need data for the students to access their lessons from home. If you have no data, you can’t have any learning.” As students stay home, providing packages of broadband data is costly. Adri estimates it will cost $15,000 to provide data plans for 250 Christel House South Africa students for two months. Every $60 can help keep a kid learning. “Then you can connect to the world because connecting to the world seems obvious, but you need information,” she says. “Every time you try to do the work we do, the stark reality of the digital divide just gets wider and wider.”

The new year brings sixty new kindergarten (Grade R) students toChristel House South Africa (CHSA) for the 2020 academic year. For many of the children, learning a new language, English,is their first lesson.

The new kindergartners who join CHSA usually speak IsiXhosa or Afrikaans as a first language at home. Occasionally we admit a learner whose native tongue is French, Portuguese or Swahili. But,English is the language of instruction at Christel House. We immerse the children into English with fun activities, using repetition and rhyme, says Michele Wiener, CHSA Deputy Principal Foundation Phase.I can confidently say that within three months, the children possess the ability to speak and understand basic English.Teachers observe the new studentsto gauge their understanding of concepts like numbers, colors and letters. No child is left behind. One-on-one attention is available for struggling students. We also teach bathroom and dining etiquette,” says AlfredaGwashu, a CHSA teacher with 18 years of experience. With some children, I have to start from scratch and teach them basics that other children their age have already learned. But she says working with the new students is worth it. “There is so much of yourself that you must give as a teacher, but it is so rewarding,” says Alfreda. “This is why I keep coming back every day.”

For students in South Africa, gang violence is one of the biggest challenges says Christel House South Africa (CHSA) CEO Adri Marais. “How we deal with violence is one of the major keys to unlocking the potential of our students,” she says. Christel House provides a safe environment for kids to learn. That includes bus transportation, a secure and peaceful school facility and “90 extremely kind, loving and predictable adult teachers and staff” says Adri.

It works. For ten years in a row, CHSA has achieved an impressive 100% pass rate on the “matric” graduation exam. The most recent graduating class attained a 72% bachelors pass rate – more than double that of the national bachelors pass rate of 33%. A bachelor pass is required for students to attain college admission. For Adri, seeing students achieve is her biggest satisfaction. “It is just absolutely beautiful.” Adri acknowledges support from donors is critical to that success. “We hold our students for 18 years – 13 at school and 5 beyond,” she says. “That needs full donor support.”

A sobering South Africa statistic: nearly 1 in 3 young South Africans is unemployed or not in school. That’s not the case at Christel House South Africa (CHSA) – 96% of our graduates are continuing their education or employed. That’s because the CHSA College & Careers program offers students guidance before and after they graduate.

As part of the College & Careers support, CHSA teamed up with FutureMe, a South Africa nonprofit focused on bringing students, schools and potential employers together. During a week-long career expo, kids engaged with universities to explore career paths by continuing their education. Several corporations were also on hand to meet about job opportunities. Ziyanda B., Grade 12, is grateful for the networking experience. “I learned so much about myself,” she says. “I gained confidence in what I want to do. And that will make me a better candidate for employment.”

Azibalule G. is in Grade 5 at Christel House South Africa. She lives with her mother and little brother in Jungle Walk, a densely populated zone within the Langa Township in Cape Town. It is a poor and dangerous place to grow up. Adri Marais, CEO of Christel House South Africa, sees the challenges kids face. “We are a gang-infested, extremely violent society,” she says. “How we deal with it is one of the major keys in unlocking the potential that our students have.” Christel House South Africa offers a safe place for children. Azibalule’s humble background fuels her desire to overcome her circumstances. She dreams to be a lawyer or a pilot. “Christel House teachers are kind,” Azibalule says. “They do their best to teach me new things.”
