For many Roma families in Gjirokastër, education remains one of the greatest opportunities to break the cycle of poverty - but it is also one of the greatest challenges. While Albania has made meaningful progress in increasing school enrollment among Roma children, significant barriers remain. National studies have found that only around 61% of Roma children attend compulsory basic education, and fewer than half of Roma young adults between the ages of 18 and 21 have completed compulsory schooling. Although enrollment has improved over the past decade, many children continue to struggle with poverty, irregular attendance, and early school dropout.
These statistics reflect realities we see in Gjirokastër. Many Roma families face financial hardship, unstable employment, and limited educational support at home. As a result, children often fall behind in school, making it increasingly difficult to remain engaged and succeed academically. Without additional support, many are at risk of leaving school early, limiting their future opportunities and perpetuating a cycle that can continue from one generation to the next.
At Nehemiah Gateway, we believe education is one of the most powerful investments we can make in a child's future. Each weekday after school, Roma children come to our Soup Kitchen, where they receive a warm, nutritious meal before sitting down to complete their homework with the help of our staff and volunteers. For many of these children, this is the only consistent place where they receive both academic encouragement and individual attention.
Our goal is about much more than helping children finish their homework. We want every child to discover that they are capable, valued, and full of potential. By providing practical support, encouragement, and a safe environment where learning is celebrated, we are helping Roma children stay in school, grow in confidence, and build a foundation for brighter futures. We believe that every lesson learned today creates new opportunities tomorrow. Not only for these children, but for their families and for the community as a whole.
