Bertha Mphinga is an AGE scholar studying at Providence Secondary School in Malawi. She entered AGE Africa’s program at the end of 2009, and is really enjoying her third year of secondary school. Prior to receiving financial support through the AGE program, Bertha's family was struggling to pay her school fees and she faced the difficult reality that she was no longer going to be able to attend school.
This year, AGE covers all of Bertha's school-related expenses, including her tuition, transportation to and from school, and expenses such as school uniforms that her family could not afford. Bertha also suffers from some medical problems. By being at school, Bertha is able to receive the medication attention necessary to treat these issues.
In classes, Berth enjoys biology where she's learning about the circulatory system and how the heart functions. Bertha says, "I can know the uses of the heart, and how I can care for it and how I can prevent from damaging it. So I will have a good life.”
