Educate underserved girls in Kibera.

In the past month we have made significant progress in promoting the girl empowerment, we successfully reached out to 120 adolescent girls and conducted several activities with them. These activities aimed to enhance their knowledge, skills, and self-care practices. The following is a summary of the activities conducted:

SRHR and Live skills Sessions:

Weekly comprehensive Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) sessions for the adolescent girls. These sessions focused on providing them with accurate information about their bodies, reproductive health, contraception, and preventing sexually transmitted infections. We emphasized on the importance of consent, healthy relationships and making informed choices. We also conducted live skills sessions that covered a wide range of topics. These sessions included workshops on communication skills, problem-solving, leadership, financial literacy, and career exploration. By equipping girls with these essential skills, we aimed to enhance their confidence and ability to navigate various life situations.

 Self-Care Session: Aqua Zumba Class

Self-care is vital for overall well-being. As part of our commitment to promoting self-care practices among adolescent girls, we conducted a lively and energetic Zumba session. This activity enabled us to combine dance and fitness, providing a fun and engaging way to stay active. The girls had the opportunity to participate in an enjoyable workout, relieving stress and boosting their physical and mental health.

Celebration of the International Day of the Girl Child.

On the occasion of the International Day of the Girl Child 2023, our organization, along with several other esteemed organizations, came together to celebrate the day with a series of empowering activities aimed at highlighting the voices and concerns of girls. The event provided a platform for girls to engage in meaningful discussions, express their aspirations, and interact with policy makers to address the issues that affect their lives. The celebration showcased the importance of empowering girls and promoting gender equality for a brighter and more inclusive future.

This year we were privileged to be part of marking the international menstrual hygiene management day and the theme of the day was,"making menstruation a normal factor by 2030."  The event took place in St. Juliet which is one of the informal schools  that we work with and they also invited other informal schools around kibera to join us in the activity. Over 200 girls were able to get dignity packs which included sanitary towels, panties and bar soaps.

We are still contributing to closing the gender gaps in education in Kibera Slums and enhancing girls’ participation in productive spaces as the project  helps in amplify the voives of young girls. We are also empowering girls to stand up for themselves and take the right actions against sexual and gender-based violence in Kibera Slums which is very rampant.

As we were conducting the weekly school programs, Sexual transmitted infections STIs is one of the sessions that was facilitated and we were able to describe in detail the common sexually transmitted infections and their symptoms, we also learnt the concept that early treatment of sexually transmitted infections can dramatically reduce the risk of infections with HIV. The  girls have an opportunity to increase their awareness and they made individual commitment stating that only way to prevention­­­­ or lower the risk of HIV transmission is abstinence.

What Would You Do? (WWYD?) Card games was part of engaging and interactive activity in decision making that helped to break the monotony of regular learning sessions. These card games help explore through play and guided conversations with peers and trained mentors the building blocks of healthy relationships. tools for self advocacy and creating personal boundaries.
