Design thinking is a mindset and approach to innovation and problem solving which is anchored around human-centered design. This is a very important tool to empower students to easily comprehend what they are learning at the same time give encouragement for them to question and improve their work. It is a different teaching and learning method because it is solution- based, user-based and not problem based. It focuses more on the solution to the problem rather than the problem itself.
There are four phases in the design thinking process:
1) Clarify or narrow down the focus of the design thinking process to identify the problem to come up woith the best outcome.
2) Find tools that are useful in creating a process that can be replicated in the future.
3) Develop concepts by evaluating a range of possible solutions.
4) Implement the design through testing, record results, reiterating the testing until its viability.
Foundation University recently conducted a workshop on Design Thinking and Innovation. This is to teach students to prepare them in dealing with problems in todays modern world. The workshop encouraged students that while technology is prevalent in today's education process, design thinking will make them consider feasibility, economic and customer value and market potential of the innovation. This workshop is also relevant to the various programs that the university offers.
This way of thinking helps students and educators to see every learning experience as an opportunity to grow and improve, rather than just score.
