Report Help Rural Kids Learn, Play, Grow & Dream!

Over the past few months the LEAP Ladder Afterschool Programme has continued working with children from the Nyara Villages through regular after-school activities that support learning and overall development. More than 100 learners from Grades 1–7 attend the programme during the week where they receive tutoring, participate in sports, and take part in life-skills activities.

Tutors and coaches spend time with the learners each afternoon, helping them with Mathematics and English while also creating space for children to learn through teamwork, play and group activities. These sessions give learners a place where they can focus on their schoolwork, build confidence, and spend time in a positive and supportive environment with their peers.

During this reporting period, the team made a small but important adjustment to the tutoring groups. Instead of grouping learners only by age, children are now grouped according to their current learning level. This has helped tutors provide support that better matches each learner’s needs and has made the tutoring sessions more engaging for many of the children.

Parents and caregivers have also shared encouraging feedback. Some parents have mentioned that their children are now more motivated to complete homework and often talk about what they learned during the programme. Others have noticed growing confidence and participation, both at school and at home.

One parent shared that her child now comes home excited to talk about the afternoon sessions and is more willing to try new things when it comes to schoolwork. Small changes like this show how steady support and encouragement can make a real difference in how children approach learning.

The programme team also continues to support the tutors and coaches through ongoing training and mentorship. These sessions help facilitators strengthen their tutoring approaches while also supporting the emotional and social well-being of the learners they work with.

As the programme continues, the focus remains on providing a consistent after-school space where children can learn, grow in confidence, and develop important skills alongside their peers.
