Summary

This project supports 100 orphaned children living with HIV in Zvimba District, Zimbabwe, who struggle to stay on treatment due to limited caregiver support. It equips 25 community health workers to provide home visits every two weeks for three months, mentoring caregivers to ensure children take medication daily and attend clinic appointments. This helps children stay on treatment, remain healthier, and grow stronger.

Challenge

In Zvimba District, Zimbabwe, many orphaned children living with HIV struggle to stay on life-saving treatment because they depend on elderly or frequently changing caregivers who often lack the knowledge and skills to manage daily medication. This leads to missed doses and clinic appointments. As a result, children fall ill, lose strength, and risk becoming seriously ill when the medicine stops working. Without consistent care, their health and future are at risk.

Solution

This project will support 100 orphaned children living with HIV through home visits every two weeks for three months by 25 community health workers. During visits, they will mentor caregivers to ensure children take medication daily, manage side effects, and attend clinic appointments, while providing emotional support to help families stay engaged in care. With consistent support, children will stay on treatment, remain healthy, and grow stronger.

Long-Term Impact

By strengthening caregivers' ability to support treatment, this project will help orphaned children living with HIV take their medication consistently over time. Caregivers will retain skills to support daily medication and clinic visits, even when caregiving changes. Healthier children will attend school and participate fully in community life. Over time, this approach strengthens community support so that children continue receiving care beyond the project period.
