The KEX Kids FUnd wishes to express its sincere thanks to our donors, supporters and our providers throughout the KEX Kids Fund service area. As Helen Keller told us, not having her vision broke connection with things" while not having her hearing isolated her from "people".

During the first quarter of 2020, January - March, the KEX Kids Fund received a toal of 8 applications as follows:  January - 3    February - 1    March - 4

Application by County was a s follows:

Multnomah - 1    Benton - 1    Clackamas - 1    Lane - 1   Linn - 1    Morrow - 1    Polk - 1    Yamhill - 1

Our thanks also goes out to the speech language pathology therapists throughout the schools of Oregon and SW Washington who help find the need that drives finding the solution for these children.

Hearing Care Activity for calendar year 2019

Dear Donors,

Thanks to our GlobalGiving donors for their generous support so we can continue to provide vision and hearing care for all eligible children requesting our help.

Our annual Thanksgiving Radio-A-Thon was held Thanksgiving Weekend on KEX 1190 AM radio station.  See https://1190kex.iheart.com and search for KEX Kids Fund On Air Pledge Drive.

Our funds are kept in one account and are used for both of our Hearing and Vision Care programs.

For the year 2019, we received a total of $190,503 – this includes the following: grants, GlobalGiving donations, and $159,589 in donor contributions from our Thanksgiving Pledge Drive.

In 2019 we received and processed 45 hearing applications for children in need in 9 Oregon counties and 1 Washington county. Our hearing care expenses for the year were $32,822.

Glenda Smith-Fowler and Ilia Fong, ESD audiologists from the Salem area, joined our board and they have recruited audiology providers to provide services to children to bridge some of the gaps from Oregon ESD funding cuts. We currently partner with 13 audiologists for our hearing program. We have 10 hearing aid loaners in our Hearing Aid Bank/Loaner Program.

Stories:

We recently helped a young child with cancer. The chemotherapy treatment caused the child’s hearing loss and KEX Kids Fund was able to help the family at a critical moment.

"I am teacher in a self-contained deaf classroom. Last year, I had a deaf student who has Microtia Atresia of the ear. Microtia is a congenital deformity affecting the outer ear where the ear does not fully develop. A Microtia ear is smaller in size and has a peanut shaped appearance (only has a small nub of the lobe present). She had difficulties seeing and needed glasses, but her ears were not able to hold up glasses comfortably. Her insurance did not cover enough to pay for contacts, so I reached out to KEX for support. KEX provided funds for contacts for up to two years! The family was extremely thankful for this donation. Now she is able to watch her ASL interpreter with ease. Thank you, KEX, for your donation and thank you to the community members out there for your contributions. KEX has been supporting our program for many years and we are very grateful! This is a season of giving, and helping a child see or hear is a great way to give back! Thank you, KEX, for all that you are doing for our kids!" --S.O., Columbia Regional Program, Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Services

Thank you again for helping us reach children who need hearing assistance in Oregon and SW Washington!
