Since 1987, the sole purpose of the KEX Kids Fund Program is to provide vision and hearing care including examinations, eyeglasses and hearing aids to children whose families cannot otherwise afford these necessary items that increase learning and communication.

The KEX Kids Fund works with a network of care providers who offer their services at reduced cost. We address the roots of these problems, providing solutions.

Thank you for your support of the hearing project for children in need. From January to September 2020, 15 hearing applications were received from 10 counties. We partnered with 13 audiology groups statewide to ensure that children receive the help they need to hear and thrive.

This is a mission that has served well over 27,000 children in our community, and closely aligns with your trust’s mission of supporting projects and activities to enhance the health, education and welfare of Oregon children. This assistance will increase early scholastic learning (80% visual) and communication and contribute to educational success.

The KEX Kids Fund provides service completely equitably with no regard for the student’s ethnicity, race, demographic, etc. During the 2019-2020 fiscal and school year, the KEX Kids Fund benefited a broad and diverse swath of ethnicities and demographics (as self-reported by recipients) and the majority of service vouchers were provided to non-white students.

The 2019-2020 school year has challenged everyone in the same way this year has challenged communities all over America and the world in coping with the novel coronavirus, Covid-19. The school year, and the KEX Kids Fund access to students in need of vision and hearing assistance was cut short in March, 2020, by the pandemic and steps to lessen its impact. None the less, the KEX Kids Fund continues to provide first quality vision and hearing exams for children in the Portland Metro (as well as all over Oregon) as well as furnishing brand new eyeglasses and hearing aids for those children in need.

During the same period, (July, 2019 – June, 2020), the KEX Kids Fund provided hearing exams and assistance as follows:

 July, ’19: - 2                       Jan.  ’20: - 3

Aug. ’19: - 1                        Feb. ’20: - 1

Sept ’19: - 5                        Mar. ’20: - 4

Oct. ’19: - 6                         April ’20: - 3

Nov. ’19: - 4                        May ’20: - 0

Dec. ’19: - 2                         June ’20: - 1

Total Applications 2019-2020 = 32

During the 2019-2020 fiscal year, the KEX Kids Fund partnered with the following 13 hearing services provider:

The KEX Kids FUnd wishes to express its sincere thanks to our donors, supporters and our providers throughout the KEX Kids Fund service area. As Helen Keller told us, not having her vision broke connection with things" while not having her hearing isolated her from "people".

During the first quarter of 2020, January - March, the KEX Kids Fund received a toal of 8 applications as follows:  January - 3    February - 1    March - 4

Application by County was a s follows:

Multnomah - 1    Benton - 1    Clackamas - 1    Lane - 1   Linn - 1    Morrow - 1    Polk - 1    Yamhill - 1

Our thanks also goes out to the speech language pathology therapists throughout the schools of Oregon and SW Washington who help find the need that drives finding the solution for these children.

Hearing Care Activity for calendar year 2019

Dear Donors,

Thanks to our GlobalGiving donors for their generous support so we can continue to provide vision and hearing care for all eligible children requesting our help.

Our annual Thanksgiving Radio-A-Thon was held Thanksgiving Weekend on KEX 1190 AM radio station.  See https://1190kex.iheart.com and search for KEX Kids Fund On Air Pledge Drive.

Our funds are kept in one account and are used for both of our Hearing and Vision Care programs.

For the year 2019, we received a total of $190,503 – this includes the following: grants, GlobalGiving donations, and $159,589 in donor contributions from our Thanksgiving Pledge Drive.

In 2019 we received and processed 45 hearing applications for children in need in 9 Oregon counties and 1 Washington county. Our hearing care expenses for the year were $32,822.

Glenda Smith-Fowler and Ilia Fong, ESD audiologists from the Salem area, joined our board and they have recruited audiology providers to provide services to children to bridge some of the gaps from Oregon ESD funding cuts. We currently partner with 13 audiologists for our hearing program. We have 10 hearing aid loaners in our Hearing Aid Bank/Loaner Program.

Stories:

We recently helped a young child with cancer. The chemotherapy treatment caused the child’s hearing loss and KEX Kids Fund was able to help the family at a critical moment.

"I am teacher in a self-contained deaf classroom. Last year, I had a deaf student who has Microtia Atresia of the ear. Microtia is a congenital deformity affecting the outer ear where the ear does not fully develop. A Microtia ear is smaller in size and has a peanut shaped appearance (only has a small nub of the lobe present). She had difficulties seeing and needed glasses, but her ears were not able to hold up glasses comfortably. Her insurance did not cover enough to pay for contacts, so I reached out to KEX for support. KEX provided funds for contacts for up to two years! The family was extremely thankful for this donation. Now she is able to watch her ASL interpreter with ease. Thank you, KEX, for your donation and thank you to the community members out there for your contributions. KEX has been supporting our program for many years and we are very grateful! This is a season of giving, and helping a child see or hear is a great way to give back! Thank you, KEX, for all that you are doing for our kids!" --S.O., Columbia Regional Program, Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Services

Thank you again for helping us reach children who need hearing assistance in Oregon and SW Washington!

Dear Donors,

Thank you GlobalGiving donors for your generous support this year!  Several donors have set up recurring donations and we appreciate this ongoing support. Thank you, too, for helping us to continue to provide vision and hearing care for all eligible children requesting our help.  Our annual Thanksgiving Radio-A-Thon will take place Thanksgiving Weekend on KEX 1190 AM radio station.  See https://1190kex.iheart.com and search for KEX Kids Fund On Air Pledge Drive.

Our funds are kept in one account and are used for both of our Hearing and Vision Care programs.

As of 9/30/2019 we have received $34,027.49.  Our hearing care expenses for so far this year were $24,301.02

for hearing care for 33 children (around $650/child).  These children received services valued at over $37,000.  (4x our expenses)

We also added four counties in Oregon and Washington to our vision and hearing programs:  Crook County in Oregon to Vision Care and Lane County in Oregon to Hearing Care; Klickitat and Walla Walla Counties in Washington to Hearing Care so that we now serve children in 24 counties in Oregon and SW Washington.

Our board member, Sherry Brown, is keeping the KEX Board updated on state funding changes and suggesting ways that the KEX Kids Fund can continue to serve children in need of hearing care services.  Glenda is helping us consider options for providing hearing care to needy children outside our current 24 county service area.  We currently have 26 audiologists in 13 locations supporting our hearing program.

Throughout the year we receive thank you notes and photos from our hearing care children. We attach copies of these items to our reports.  Thank you again for helping us to bring sound to needy children in Oregon and SW Washington.
