Families in rural Guatemala cook over open fires causing life-threatening health problems especially for women and children.
Toddlers are by their mothers' sides when mom is cooking. They often are burned and suffer respiratory problems. It's hard to believe that in 2023 this problem still exists.
Women and children spend hours searching for wood and have to carry heavy loads back to their houses. Bundles of wood lasts only a few days because open fire cookstoves consume 70% more wood than an enclosed firebox.
The only solution is a safe, vented stove. It has less impact on the environment, creates a healthy kitchen, and provides a safe place for moms to cook for their families. Our project team trains each family how to use and maintain the stove.
Actually, a vented stove is a very inexpensive way to prevent deaths.
