A GROWing Program with Lasting Impact

By Payal Morari | Co-President

Dear GlobeMed Friends and Family,

We have spent the summer preparing our chapter for a new year, reconnecting with GlobeMed Headquarters, and our partner, SOVA, through our Grassroots Onsite Work Internship, otherwise referred to as GROW.

Our GROW interns are currently in Odisha, India, finishing up their three week internship in which they worked with our partner to solidify our Partnership Agreement Form for this year, and where they learned more about the program we fund and its impact on the Odian community.

This year, we have committed to raising $9000 to fund the Medical Training Program. This money will go towards hiring two trainers - a Doctor and a General Nursing Midwife, and an instructor, supplying teaching materials such as bags, booklets, and pens, and supplying medical equipment and other necessary items that the students will use in their education in chemistry and other sciences. This year, part of the budget has also been dedicated to funding a career program that will expose interns to potential employers and different career paths such as working in a government hospital or with a private practice.

We have also developed a method to communicate not only with SOVA, but also with the program interns throughout the year. We will be developing specific surveys throughout the year and sending them to SOVA, who will pass on the surveys to the interns and send their responses back to us. SOVA was very pleased to participate, and our GROW interns have already introduced the idea to the program interns, giving us ample reason to look forward to smooth communication throughout the year.

SOVA has decided to open the program to men as well, and we support their decision, as we both feel that it is important for men to be aware of the issues as well, to stimulate growth as a community. With that being said, however; the program is still true to its intention of empowering Odian females and youth. In fact, we are excited to announce that the next class will be made up of 30 female interns!

Across the globe, our GROW interns are fortunate to interact directly with our partner, and to see the impact on the community is a truly humbling experience.

On our campus, when the new school year starts, we like to sit down with each of our members and talk about what role they play or what impact they’d like to have on our program or our partnership. Whether this means taking leadership within their committees, planning logistics, running our chapter meetings, spreading awareness and creating lasting relationships in our communities, or working directly with our partner, each of our members plays a significant role in the success of our partnership with the Social Organization for Voluntary Action.

Although you may not be physically on our campus or directly involved in our chapter’s activities, we ask that you take a minute to appreciate the role you can play in helping to make our project successful. By donating to our project via GlobalGiving, you are directly funding the Medical Care Training Program for Odian Females and Youth, and impacting growth in a community miles away.

Your support has helped both GlobeMed and SOVA immensely, and without committed donors, our partnership would not have grown to where it is now. Raising $9000 is an intimidating commitment, but we know with your help, we will be able to achieve this goal, and maybe even surpass it. We are excited for what the future holds and we look forward to your continued support
throughout this partnership and beyond.

In solidarity,

GlobeMed at the University of Rochester
