Good nutrition helps children to have the energy to enjoy, laughing, playing and learning in the programs of FE. All children should have the opportunity to have better nutrition. Yogurt with Amor tries to make sure children with a disAbility have this opportunity for better nutrition. YCA continues to focus on providing yogurt to those who need it most.
YCA received some rather large requests for their granola. One customer asked for 800 pounds of granola in one week. Imagine the surprise of the women who produce the granola. One woman said “wow I had to really poured a lot of love into that batch.” The gluten free granola has really taken Matagalpa by storm, that’s right 800 pounds. The granola request was exported to Costa Rica, YCA has all the government permissions and sanitary conditions to be able to meet this kind of request. The Yogurt Production area rose to the occasion, borrowing a few ovens in the process. Then they quickly transitioned from granola to concentrating on the seasonal fruit based Yogurts, such as nancite & jocotes. The children who attend classes and receive therapy benefit from a more balanced diet because the fruit is added to the yogurt and gives them more energy. FE sees this as part of an integral health program of nutrition and exercise needed by a child with disAbility.
Bringing nutrition to those who need it most is the main objective. The team of social promoters work hand in hand with the mothers of children with disAbilities to promote nutrition in the poorest neighborhoods in Matagalpa. The products are also available in all of FE’s centers and in the park. Recently the largest supermarket chain in Matagalpa has requested YCA in their stores as well as the largest bakery has weekly taste testing of the products. So YCA is being able to continue to support the children’s lunch program, with their funds and with their products. In the meantime they are looking to hire a staff person in charge of promotion and sales.
Many students coming from the different universities are asking to do their work study practice in the Yogurt factory. This adds to new ideas and growth for the program even though Nicaragua continues in a socio-political situation. YCA is determined to keep producing and creating in order to help the person with disAbilities by using new strategies to innovate products and reach more places for those who need to improve their nutrition with love.
