This project provides basic healthcare & education in the least developed area of Nepal. There are no roads in Humla and the government health system is dysfunctional. Maternal and child mortality rates are among the highest in the world (<30%). More than 50,000 people live in the district. The project is integrated with education, food security, WASH, renewable energy and income generation projects to promote a healthier lifestyle and a secure future for, particularly, women and children.
This report will provide insight into activities completed during the second quarter (April to June, 2026), including procurement, transportation and handover of medicines, as well as the implementation of the the Little Doctors Programe. The report has been submitted by our partners; Nepal Development Foundation (NDF) and SHIP Nepal. The project areas include; Namkha, Simikot, Kharpunath, Sarkegad, Chankhali, Tajakot RM (Humla district).
Due to a lack of awareness and economic hardship, many marginalised communities in Humla district have limited access to health and education services. Consultations were held with local government and communities to discuss the provision of regular health services. Medical equipment and essential medicines were supplied and skilled health workers were deployed to remote posts located across; Yari, Bargaun, Sarkegad, Piplang, Tumcha and Maspur.
47 types of medicines and medical equipment were procured, transported and handed over to the respective health posts. Co-ordination meetings were held with health management committees, local government and SHIP Nepal to ensure the sustainable mobilisation of health workers, correct dispensing of medicines and the provision of regular health services. A total of 1,797 female and 1,451 males received direct health services. The project has made a significant contribution to reducing deaths caused by lack of treatment due to financial hardship and also controlling the birth rate. Outbreaks of disease and the number of infected people has decreased.
The Little Doctors Programme will be delivered in four schools in August; Mansarovar Secondary School and Balmamandir Secondary School in Simikot, Raling Secondary School in Bargaun and Himivoti Secondary School in Sarkegad. The programme will run for one month. All materials have been procured. The Little Doctors Programme aims to enhance children's interest and awareness in health and hygiene, develop their knowledge of nutrition, healthy lifestyle, various diseases and the ability to carry out basic First Aid.
Monitoring and co-ordination meetings were conducted at five schools in Humla district where school renovation and furniture support programs were implemented in 2025. The schools included; Shree Deval Basic School Tumcha, Ishwas Basic School Chyagi, Himivoti Secondary School Sarkegad, Humla Secondary School Raya and Kailash Secondary School Dandaphava. These works helped to improve their administration operations and enhanced the overall teaching and learning environment.
There is a recognised need to establish internet connectivity in the Maspur area of Humla district to expand access to information and communication services. A joint discussion and co-ordination meeting was held with SHIP Nepal, the local community and Everest Wireless Network Pvt. Ltd. A funding request has been submitted to the NDF to secure a budget for implementing this project.
A joint meeting between Sarkegad Rural Municipality, Saya Health Post and SHIP Nepal reached an agreement to organise a three-day Maternal Health (Obstetrics and Gynecology) and Pediatric Health Camp. Six health workers were involved in this training.
Maternity services have started at birthing centres in Piplang, Kermi, Bargaun, Sarkegad and Tumcha. This has significantly improved the health of mothers and newborns and there has been no death of mother and child. These services are currently being carried out informally at Yari and Maspur birthing centres.
In recognition of the direct support provided to marginalised communities in accordance with local government policy, schools and local government have awarded SHIP Nepal, a certificate of appreciation.
