Health Book in Bahasa to Remote Indonesian Islands

Dear supporters,

Thank you so much for your generous support of PERDHAKI's efforts to print and distribute copies of Where Women Have No Doctor in Bahasa. 

Preliminary copies of the information are being used to train health workers, and PERDHAKI looks forward to having printed copies of the entire book. 

We will be wrapping up this campaign on August 22nd, and will send a full report on the impact and distribution of the books at that time. In the mean time, we wanted to let you know that now is the time to share the campaign, if you know anyone who might be interested--all gifts from now until the 22nd will be matched dollar-for-dollar, and every dollar given will go toward printing costs.

Reaching this goal will help support a small print run that will go into immediate use by PERDHAKI's family health volunteers, who are saving the lives of mothers on rural islands of Indonesia. Thank you for your support!

Did you know that Hesperian and PERDHAKI have worked together for several years to successfully support community health programs?

PERDHAKI first approached Hesperian for free copies of books in English, because they could not afford to buy the books, even at a discount. After receiving and using the free books, Dr. Felix Gunawan, the director of PERDHAKI, saw an opportunity to improve upon the books: translating them into Bahasa Indonesia, the local language.

The view from the ground is often the best way to understand why health information is vitally important to a community. Dr. Gunawan describes the need this way:

“People on remote islands often lack in health and medical resources and therefore need to be self-sufficient. PERDHAKI has distributed our translation of “Where Women Have No Doctor” to health workers, community workers on the major islands (e.g., Java, Sumatra) but needs funding to distribute books to more remote islands. By giving village health workers current medical information in their native language, we can provide better care to mothers during their pregnancies and after, and to sick mothers and women in general.”

Any money raised by this campaign will make these books a reality. Each book, in turn, will support community health workers in caring for women’s health. Each health worker will then empower an average of 40 women with information, so that they are each able to advocate for their health as well. We hope you will share this campaign, and help PERDHAKI meet their goal!
