Protect Sickle Cell Kids from Meningitis

By Elizabeth Elachi | Project Leader

Dear partners,

Meningitis is one of the most lifethreatening infections faced by children living with sickle cell disease (SCD). Because their spleens often stop functioning early in life, these children cannot effectively fight off the bacteria that cause meningitis. A mild fever can escalate into severe brain infection within hours, leading to seizures, permanent disability, or death. In rural communities across Nasarawa State, where enhanced vaccines are not part of routine care, meningitis continues to claim the lives of vulnerable infants.

Our project, Enhanced Vaccines for Sickle Cell Kids in Nigeria, directly confronts this danger. With your support, we are providing the critical vaccines that protect sickle cell infants from the bacteria most responsible for deadly meningitis. These lifesaving vaccines—especially the meningococcal vaccines and pneumococcal vaccines—are not included in Nigeria’s routine immunization schedule. Most families cannot afford them, leaving sickle cell infants exposed to infections that spread quickly and strike without warning.

In the coming months, our team will deliver newborn genotype testing and fully funded enhanced vaccines across Keffi, Karu, and Toto LGAs. Early diagnosis ensures that infants with SCD are identified before they fall seriously ill. Early vaccination ensures they receive the protection that prevents meningitis from taking hold. Together, these interventions dramatically reduce emergency hospitalizations, neurological complications, and the catastrophic medical expenses families face when a child becomes critically sick.

Your donation is helping us stop meningitis before it starts. A gift of $21 CAD provides the full set of enhanced vaccines for one child, shielding them from deadly infections like meningitis and pneumonia. A gift of $69 CAD fully immunizes three infants, giving families hope for a healthier future.

Thank you for standing with these children. With your support, we are preventing avoidable deaths and giving sickle cell infants the chance to grow, thrive, and live beyond the shadow of meningitis.

Warmly,
