Keep 500 Sick Kids Alive in Crisis-Hit Communities

Dear partners,

One of the most dangerous but overlooked triggers of sickle cell crises is dehydration. When a child does not have enough water, their blood becomes thicker, circulation slows, and painful vasoocclusive episodes begin. For displaced families living in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps and informal settlements, reliable access to clean drinking water is often scarce. Children may go long hours without water, rely on contaminated sources, or ration what little they have — all of which sharply increase the risk of severe pain crises and lifethreatening complications.

Our project is designed to confront this challenge directly. With your support, we are providing hydration packs, oral rehydration salts, and safewater containers to families who have no dependable water supply. Through our mobile clinics, we will teach caregivers how dehydration triggers sickling, how often children should drink, and how to recognize early signs of crisis. We are also partnering with local facilities to ensure that sickle cell children receive clean water during clinic visits and emergency care.

In the coming days, once GlobalGiving disburses the next round of funds, we will begin a radio advocacy campaign to reach thousands of caregivers with lifesaving information about hydration. This program will teach families how to keep children hydrated even in harsh camp conditions, how to avoid unsafe water sources, and how to act quickly when dehydration symptoms appear. Radio remains one of the most effective ways to reach rural and displaced communities, and your generosity is making this possible.
