Dear partners,
Malaria is a serious illness for any child, but for children living with sickle cell disease, it is far more dangerous. Their bodies respond differently to infection, and even a mild case of malaria can quickly become lifethreatening.
Children with sickle cell disease already live with chronic anemia. When malaria parasites invade the blood, they destroy red blood cells at a much faster rate. This sudden drop in hemoglobin can trigger severe fatigue, pain crises, and in many cases, emergency hospitalization. Many families describe malaria as the one illness they fear the most because it destabilizes their children so quickly.
Malaria also increases the risk of complications such as acute anemia, organ stress, and prolonged recovery periods. A child who might normally bounce back in a few days can spend weeks trying to regain strength. During this time, school attendance, daily activities, and emotional wellbeing are all affected.
Unfortunately, many sickle cell families cannot afford preventive tools such as insecticidetreated nets, malaria prophylaxis, or early diagnostic tests. Some live in rural or crisisaffected areas where malaria is common and healthcare access is limited. As a result, children often arrive at the hospital late, when the infection is already severe.
Your support helps us change this. Through this project, donations help fund hydroxyurea and essential medicines for for sickle cell children, ensuring they're strong enough to fight infections
A $25 donation helps us provide essential support to a child who is vulnerable to malaria’s effects. It ensures they receive timely care and gives them a better chance to recover without longterm setbacks.
Thank you for standing with sickle cell children. Your support helps protect them from one of the most dangerous infections they face.
