Hello,
I wanted to highlight that though malnutrition is a global emergency, our sickle cell kids are the hardest hit. 45% of all deaths in children under five are linked to malnutrition (UNICEF/WHO)
In crisisridden regions of Northern Nigeria, these numbers are even worse. Displacement due to farmer-herder clashes, food insecurity, and collapsed health systems mean many children eat only once a day. Sometimes, nothing to eat at all.
Children with sickle cell disease have unique biological challenges that make nutrition absolutely critical:
They burn more calories because their bodies constantly replace damaged red blood cells.
They need more protein to rebuild tissues and maintain healthy blood levels.
They require more vitamins and minerals (folate, B12, zinc, vitamin D) to prevent severe anemia.
Severe malnutrition weakens the blood, thereby increasing the need for frequent costly, hard-to-access blood transfusion.
