The War Survivors Institute will screen and provide trauma healing for children in wartime Ukraine and their caregivers. Using the evidence-based Refugee Health Screener-15 - validated in 42+ countries - and art-based Transformational Healing Experiences, WSI identifies invisible wounds, delivers targeted therapy, and trains local psychologists to sustain care long after each program ends.
Children growing up in wartime Ukraine face severe psychological trauma, including PTSD, depression, and anxiety. Since 2022, millions of Ukrainians have been displaced or affected by constant violence, air raids, and loss. Children living in these conditions often go unscreened and untreated, leaving invisible wounds to deepen over time without proper intervention.
WSI's solution combines three pillars: screening children and caregivers with the Refugee Health Screener-15 to identify PTSD, anxiety, and depression; delivering art-based and somatic healing - imagery, movement, and peer support - to help children process trauma safely; and training local psychologists with evidence-based tools they can apply independently, ensuring care continues long after WSI leaves.
WSI builds lasting local capacity by training Ukrainian practitioners through hands-on mentorship and co-facilitation. Partnerships with Children of Heroes Charity Fund and Re:Creators embed trauma-informed care into existing community structures. Early data confirms measurable healing - RHS-15 scores dropping from 24 to 20. Every trained practitioner becomes a multiplier, reaching new children for years to come.
