Introduction
Access to good nutrition in childhood is imperative to break intergenerational cycles of poverty. Good nutrition, especially in the first 1000 days of life, optimises early childhood development and provides the foundation for human capital development across the life course. With a strong, healthy body and brain, children can learn well and develop into adults who can contribute meaningfully to society and the economy. Eliminating child malnutrition could increase South Africa’s Gross Domestic Product per capita by approximately 9%.
Our Recipient Partner
Masibulele Educare Centre is a dedicated early childhood development centre for children up to five years old. The centre is based in the Zwelihle township, in Hermanus, South Africa. The Principal, Sweetness Rwexana has a passion for serving her community and this centre was established from this perspective. The centre currently serves 88 children and has a staff of six(6) teachers. Through the GlobalGiving Fund, Headstart Kids was able to provide a breakfast solution for the centre, ensuring that the meals children receive are highly nutritious and ensuring that variety is made available. The greatest challenge for the centre is the availability of vegetables in the children’s meals, therefore, in collaboration with Soul Foods programme, a vegetable garden was planted in the school.
Planting Seedlings of Hope
In collaboration with Headstart Kids, Soul Foods supplied a box of seedlings and conducted a gardening workshop with the centre manager, teachers and groundsman , teaching them to transform their back yard area to a lively vegetable garden. The seedlings will provide the centre with the variety of vegetables needed for nutritious meals. Each box contains 240 seeds which will provide a variety of vegetables. The vision goes beyond the practitioners, but the knowledge is to be passed on to the children so that they can learn sustainable means of growing their own food.
A Call for Further Funding
We are seeking additional funding to expand our Optimal Health Programme to the 81 centres in Hermanus, reaching approximately 3,000 children. With over a decade of proven impact, our organisation is fully equipped to manage this scale. The funding will support the provision of micronutrients, deworming, practitioner training, and a robust monitoring and evaluation framework, alongside our food security and gardening initiatives. We look forward to strengthening our partnership with you to advance child health and development.
