Access to proper nutrition in early childhood is essential for breaking cycles of poverty. We support 461 children aged 6 months to 6 years in ECD centres near Ford Hermanus, Western Cape. Each child receives a daily food solution combining macro- and micronutrients, plus biannual deworming. This improves growth, immunity, and development. The programme is monitored through baseline and endline assessments to measure impact.
Food insecurity in the Western Cape affects one in eight children, with 17.5% stunted and 15% overweight-signifying a double burden of malnutrition.
To address this, we propose integrating MNPs into ECD feeding programmes, accompanied by biannual deworming and nutrition education. This proven model fosters healthier growth, strengthens immunity, and supports child development.
As suggested above, food insecurity affects 1 in 8 children in the Western Cape. Stunting (17.5%) and obesity (15%) undermine child health and learning. Poor nutrition early in life leads to lower school achievement, reduced productivity, and higher healthcare costs-ultimately weakening economic growth. Scalable interventions like MNPs and deworming in ECDs can break this cycle and boost human capital.
