In January 2017, 4 year- old Deborah enrolled in Harmony Preschool. She was shy, didn’t interact with her classmates and generally lacked the social skills necessary to participate in our hands-on learning based curriculum and culture.
By the end of her year at Harmony she was animated and fully engaged and often lead the afternoon class as the first to respond when a question was asked, for students to present their work or tell a story.
Her father Andre, remarked on the big change in her behavior and her performance. “She no longer whines but helps at home and doesn’t hesitate to share when she asked about what she learned at school.”
Andre is happy for the change Ready for Reading’s Harmony Preschool has made in Deborah’s life “I used to see the yellow sun logo on many of your papers, I had to compare that with the fast change I have seen in Deborah and made me to realize that Ready for Reading is shining right for the fundamental education of Rwinkwavu.”
Deborah entered Primary 1 last month and as with other Harmony graduates, teachers are amazed by how well prepared and far beyond others our students are. Deborah still visits the Harmony classroom when she comes to Open Library for after school activities.
Deborah, a definite success story for Harmony, has one brother in the morning class and another in the afternoon class. It is so rewarding that families recognize the value of Harmony School and send their children year after year.
In 2017, True to our mission, Ready for Reading continued to extend our reach for the benefit of more than our Harmony teachers and students. Our Module 1 and Module 2 curriculum teacher training now includes both preschool and early primary school teachers from the local area and as far away as the capital, Kigali.
The end of November closed out another school year in Rwanda. The final day parents are invited in for the end of year conference and to celebrate with their children. In addition to educating their children we at Ready for Reading/Harmony Preschool are teaching parents the importance of education and how they can be active participants in their children’s success.
With the new school year just three weeks old, our 2 classes are fully enrolled and in full throttle. As always, Harmony Head Teacher Jean reads a story clearly related to a weekly theme, with appropriate props and exciting drama, so every child is interested, engaged and ready to learn!!!
We'll be sure to keep you posted as our 2018 schoolyear unfolds.
