Updates from Happy Classrooms

By Chris Clarke | Project Coordinator

Hi everyone,

During these difficult times, we thought we would try to bring you a few small bits of positive news from the Happy Classrooms project in Kenya.

Last month the team made return visits to Birunda and St.Jospeph's schools, to meet with the new Headteachers and discuss the project. The headteachers had seen the work done to transform the grade 1 classrooms, and were incredibly keen and supportive to see more classes painted in their schools. As half-term was rapidly approaching (one week away), the team acted fast to organise with the school, artist and volunteers, and gather all required materials to make the most of the opportunity.

The following week the team worked round the clock to transform 4 classrooms in only 8 days! Here's what two of the teachers had to say:

“Since I started teaching on Monday, it has helped me in all the learning areas. For example, in mathematics, I was teaching number patterns, so these learners were able to count from number one to ten. We were using the wall without telling them to come with counters…In English we have got the identifying game, these learners even when I am not in class they concentrate and they play the game..."
Mrs Pauline, class two teacher at St Joseph’s Primary School

" We are now having talking walls, teachers from those classes do not need to carry portable teaching aids the walls are talking.”
Ms Khaemba, deputy headteacher Birunda Primary School.

The team even managed to post a short video on Facebook of the transformation in progress:

With schools now closed and much in-country movement suspended we have put on hold all school visits and painting, but there's still plenty to do as the team are working on new resources for grade 3-4 classes alongside teacher training materials.

We would also like to extend a huge thanks and appreciation to everybody who has donated to the project, and also those who have been actively helping the team in Kenya with planning, resources and general support.
