Challenge

Across Africa, millions of families rely on health workers to bring care, comfort, and hope-but there simply aren't enough of them. Africa's deficit of healthcare workers is expected to reach 6.1 million by 2030. Without more trained professionals, preventable deaths will continue to rise and basic healthcare will remain out of reach. Low investment in education and lack of accredited training institutions have left many aspiring health professionals without the opportunity to learn and serve.

Solution

Amref founded Amref International University (AMIU) - a first-of-its-kind institution built by Africans, for Africans - to close the continent's health workforce gap. At AMIU, students receive world-class training in nursing, midwifery, laboratory science, public health, and more. These programs empower students from remote and underserved communities to gain the skills they need to transform health outcomes where they live. Almost 90% of AMIU graduates stay and work in Africa.

Long-Term Impact

One AMIU graduate can reach thousands of people every year with lifesaving care. Almost 90% of AMIU graduates stay and work in Africa, often returning home to serve their own communities. By training the next generation of health workers, Amref is helping to close both the health worker gap and the healthcare shortage gap across Africa.
