Program Summary 'Hands On' is a multifaceted approach to sign language education in a real life setting, educating deaf youth, hearing parents, and the hearing community in general about deaf issues and capacities. This program is also aimed to create a very important deaf community for these otherwise isolated individuals. Our priorities are: Sign Language Access, Customized Deaf Education Materials, and the Deaf community
There is limited access to education for deaf children. Many children go without learning a first language due to their deafness, which in turn requires them to be dependent on their families for the rest of their lives and limits their ability to do even the most basic type of job. The lack of Independence threatens their security and damages their self-esteem.
This project will create a community for deaf individuals who otherwise live in rural, isolated areas and give them access to sign language education and vocational training.
With a specially designed teaching methodolgy focused on communication, the youth and young adults will learn basic literacy and numeracy skills providing them with a more independent and secure future.
