School holidays did not stop eager pupils in underdeveloped parts of Ho Municipality, from attending Volta Regional Library’s mobile computer classes. With your support, the library travels to schools in a mobile library van equipped with solar-charged laptop computers and wi-fi internet so that children can get hands-on computer experience.
Impressed by the service, community leaders and teachers encouraged pupils to attend the holiday classes. From June to August, the library held 10 classes, reaching a total of 53 pupils in three schools: Klefe Achatime, Taviefe and Ziavi Dzogbe.
Librarians guided the pupils in computer-based research projects focused on local development issues. Pupils, who are mostly from farming families, learnt to research the internet for useful information about the main crops grown in the area –cassava, yam and maize – and about fish-farming. They took the information home to share with their parents.
Meanwhile, pupils are anxiously waiting for the 2013 Basic Education Certificate Examination results, which will tell them how well they have fared in their technology exams and whether they can progress to secondary school.
